We recently took a trip to see historic Guthrie and to meet Byron Berline. We took in the town sites, history and caught a show while on our one day excursion - and more!
The fiddlers decided to hold an annual field trip to kick-off the upcoming year and build excitement amongst the ranks. We decided on Guthrie because of the many historical and cultural activities available and because of Byron Berline. We wanted to see a real fiddler in action and up close. Mr. Berline graciously blocked out a portion of his afternoon to spen with us. We took a tour of his never-ending fiddle shop and saw some amzing fiddles, guitars and mandolins. Mr. Berline gave us some great insight into his career as a professional fiddler. Before the show we were surprised when we were asked to open up the show for Mr. Berline - of course, fiddlers don't back down to an invite like that. We spent our afternoon having an early dinner at the original train depot and getting in a quick warm up for later that night. The acoustics of the train depot were great and our fiddles rang out as though we were panhandling for food in the dust bowl days - someone would have fed us. As showtime drew near, we realized we would be playing to a sold out crowd! We opened up with Milk Cow Bllues and some of our Oklahoma State Fiddle Song Faded Love. Finishing up with Boil 'em Cabbage we brought the house down just in time to settle down and watch the big boys. It was a late night getting home but by far the best kick-off ever.
